My Mother's Country, Barbara Weir. Size 90 x 120 cm.
Dreaming: In this painting, Barbara depicts the ancient stories of land of her birth and that of her mother, Minnie Pwerle. Her father was Irish station master Jack Weir, and Barbara was removed from her family at 10 years of age during the years of the stolen generation. Even though her mother Minnie took up painting very late in life, she became one of the first internationally celebrated aboriginal women artists before her death in 2006. Many of the creation stories, places, ceremonies and sacred symbols depicted in Minnie's paintings are also depicted but deliberately obscured beneath fine dots Barbara's retelling.
